In a recent conversation, business speaker Dustin Adkinson and I discussed the challenges of marketing in today's tough economy. One of the things that Dustin reminded me of was this very basic fact of life: we tend to lean toward what we dwell upon, no matter what that may be. Therefore it’s important to intentionally choose what we focus upon.
Here's what Dustin had to say:
Back in the day, there was a young lady known as "Pollyanna." These days you hear people say, "Don't be such a Pollyanna," because Pollyanna was an optimistic little girl whose dad taught her to take whatever came her way, and look for the positive in it.
I really, truly do believe that we tend to lean toward what we dwell upon. So if you can take and look at something in a positive fashion, no matter what it is, then that's what you're going to move toward. So for example, when you wake up in the morning, you have a new opportunity facing you each day.
If I'm in sales, how many people do I really need to make a profit? Let's say I need 100 people. If I'm making a profit with each of those people that I convince one certain way to be, then it doesn't matter what the rest of the world thinks. We can see things in the news, we can hear about stories; whatever it may be, we just need the few. Once we have that, it lets us multiply to the many.
A positive mental attitude is the best thing that you can have. The best thing you can do is to take an approach where you go beyond whatever exists in the world today. There have been studies over the last four years that have proven that happiness is contagious.
But the funny thing about our society is that we're taught that it's all about money. Well, I've had money; I've been there and done that, and that's not what brings happiness. In fact, according to Forbes magazine, 87% of the people on their Forbes 100 list are unhappy. That being the case, how can you say money brings happiness? It doesn't. What brings happiness is your choice, the decision that you want to become happy. Because you choose to be happy, everything else will follow.
You've got to be gracious. You've got to have gratitude, and understand and appreciate what life brings you each day. That way you can be happy, and everything else will fall into place. It's all about love.

In the original Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill pointed out that one of the crucial steps to success is imagination. He talks about two kinds: creative imagination, and synthetic imagination. When I updated his ideas in The NEW Think and Grow Rich, I discussed creative and synthesizing, rather than synthetic, imagination. I just felt more comfortable with "synthesizing": it seemed like it was doing something.
Synthesizing imagination is doing your regular due diligence: you judge, or try and create, or problem-solve whatever your project is, from what you already know about how the process works.
Creative imagination is what you use when you're looking for a breakthrough. And that's where you'll notice that independent people excel. For instance, The Beatles: they were definitely creative geniuses.
Now, putting together the laws of music to make chords, to make harmony and rhythm—that's using synthesizing imagination. But to get absolutely inspired and create a Hey Jude, or a Penny Lane, or something that takes music to a whole new place—that's creative imagination.
And that comes, again, from the sixth sense realm, the HoloMagic realm, the realm where you're communicating at a deep level. Of course, we know, by the way, that The Beatles were living!! That they were deep into altered consciousness. We know that for sure, and their world shows it. Oh yeah it does!
But you don't have to alter your consciousness with drugs to get the kinds of results they did. All it takes is a little HoloMagic, and a little work, to combine your creative imagination with your synthesizing imagination to achieve the kind of success that you've been looking for.

It was the late, great Earl Nightingale who first forwarded the idea, as I heard it, that we live in a "quick fix" society—and boy, if that's ever been true, it surely is today!
As professional marketers, we play on that. That's a major part of our sales copy. It's easier, it's quicker; and the quicker it is, as in instant, the better. Our prospects want success to be like taking a magic pill: the less effort, as in none, the better they like it.
These ideas are attractive, and they seduce many people. They're also responsible for generating many, many millions of marketing dollars—and I've got to admit, I've had my share. I am a professional marketer. Like you, I try to make things look better in my profession when I'm selling. It is a noble job.
We've all got our work to do. But it flies in the face of Natural Law, the truth does. Natural Law: you know, that's the title of the introduction I put together for The NEW Think and Grow Rich. "It's a world of cause and effect": those are the very first words in the preface. It's one of the key principles of The NEW Think and Grow Rich.
That's Principle #2: The Law of Vibration, The Law of Duality, The Law of Electricity, The Law of Magnetism, The Law of Growth. Now, obviously we're talking about just one law; but it is expressed in many different ways, and it's responsible for many different phenomena. But we, as wealth achievers—as people who contribute to this world and receive a just reward way, way greater than normal—for us, it happens by design. It happens because we educate ourselves and apply ourselves and leverage our actions according to Natural Law.
So really, how much more in tune with reality could Napoleon Hill have been, when he coined the original title Think and Grow Rich? Think about it. How much closer to the truth could he have been when he said, "grow rich"?
Grow. It's clear in the title that we've got a process that is not instantaneous, that requires the process of Natural Law. You have to grow. Take a normal North American environment: you're going to have a growing season. That involves one year, and then you get another chance.
So grow the crops that you want; and by the way, like a lot of trees, your business should grow every single year. That, of course, is the idea; but again, it's a growth process. You carefully select the seed that you want. You plant it lovingly at the right time. You tend it, giving it the proper amounts of lighting and shade. You water it, you weed it, you nurture it as it grows. You love it. And then, at the end of the season, you receive the fruit.
It is a process, so don't buy into the "quick fix" instant solutions. Go to work. Create your life!
